Tree Planting in Haylodge Park

Consider request to plant trees in Haylodge Park on 30th November 2019.

Minutes:

The Chairman advised that he had been approached by a pupil at Peebles High School who was keen to plant trees in Haylodge Park to coincide with the event being promoted by the Woodland Trust entitled The Big Climate Fightback.  This was a campaign to get one million people to join the fight against climatechange by pledging to plant a tree by Saturday 30 November 2019.  Councillor Anderson advised that she and Neil Pringle had walked around the park identifying areas which could be planted and this was to be reported to the next Common Good Fund meeting on 20 November.  She expressed concern that this request might be premature in advance of the consideration of the bigger picture for the park.   Neil Pringle advised that the Council could provide a small number of trees (6) which could be planted in one of the areas identified and would not impact on the overall planting plans.  Members discussed the request and Community Councillor Hayworth advised that the trees could be moved to a more appropriate location at a later date if necessary.  This initial planting could be seen as a statement of intent for future planting in the Park.  Members were keen to support the request and agreed to the planting of 6 trees by 30 November 2019.

DECISION

AGREED to approve the request to plant 6 trees in Haylodge Park in support of the Big Climate Fightback and as the first part of a wider planting scheme for the park.
